THE ECO-TECHIES
ECOBEE founded by Canadian serial entrepreneur, Stuart Lombard, creates smarter home thermostats and devices that are easy to use, well designed, and significantly reduce homeowners’ energy consumption and costs. In November 2021, Ecobee was acquired by Generac Holdings Inc. for up to $770 million USD. This transaction created a home energy ecosystem that brings benefits to both homeowners and grid operators
DESIGN CHALLENGE: To launch the Ecobee brand, from ground zero, with differentiated brand strategy, naming and brand identity design in a market dominated by long-time leaders with strong brand awareness. The design mandate for Ecobee’s first product, a smart home thermostat, was to create a modern ‘look and feel’ to convey the product’s revolutionary capabilities and competitive design advantage. A cohesive brand program would also help the team secure significant investor funding.
BRAND STRATEGY: Extensive, qualitative research, with industry professionals and potential consumers, informed the development of Ecobee’s brand strategy. The objective of this strategic work was understood as being pivotal to all aspects of Ecobee’s growth and development, including marketing, communications, R&D, sales, team building, and physical working space.
